Duluth Sister Cities Bridges to Global Understanding Project

June 9 – July 9, 2015

The Arrowhead Regional Arts Council awarded $5,000 to Duluth Sister Cities International, for its program Art = Bridges to Global Understanding. The project includes Duluth area middle school students, nominated by their art teachers, learning from professional artists in various media to produce Duluth-themed artwork. The students and their parents will participate in showing their work at various venues in Duluth, culminating with the artwork traveling to Duluth’s five sister cities for showings in each sister city. The project will develop art and leadership skills in the students while instilling a global awareness, and incorporates 16 middle school age children with UMD Art & Design Department Professor Alison Aune and UMD Art & Design Department Assistant Professor Dr. Fatih Benzer. This project runs from June 9 – July 9.

FINE ARTS ACADEMY ART CAMP (June 12 – July 10, 2015)

The Fine Arts Academy art camp is the collaboration between the UMD Fine Arts Academy, Art and Design Professor Dr. Alison Aune, and the Tweed Museum of Art.

  • Camp activities feature exhibitions at the Tweed Museum of Art and utilize the university art education studio as a venue to inspire innovative inquiry, artistic creativity, and meaningful learning for children. Children will learn and create through drawing and watercolor painting, acrylic painting, and sculpture. This camp combines traditional pedagogical strategies with experimental alternatives in the field of art education. In this way, our goal is to foster collaboration that expands and broadens content knowledge and practice in art for children and youth.
  • 21 children in grades K-5 participate in camp activities from 10:00 am – 12 pm on June 12, 19, 26, and July 10
  • A final showcase and celebration will take place on Friday, July 10 from 10:00 – 12 pm in the Sax Gallery at the Tweed Museum of Art
  • The camp is layered with Professor Aune's Art in Elementary Education summer session course.
  • This course offers instructional strategies for integrating global art into the elementary curriculum based on the developmental stages of artistic expression in children and contemporary theories in the field.
  • Museum and multicultural-based experiences are combined with outreach opportunities to develop meaningful art experiences for children.
  • The Fine Arts Academy hired UMD student intern, Mary Ethier, to assist with camp activities. Mary is a double major in Art History and History.
  • Alison Aune is assisted by Chelsea Baubliz, a UMD elementary education major, and Kinzie Longley, a UMD art education major.
