Filmmakers at UMD for Screening of “The Throwaways”

Duluth, MN — The Philosophy Department in partnership with other College of Liberal Arts Departments will host a screening of “The Throwaways” on Monday, March 9, 2017 at 7 p.m. in Bohannon 90. The event is free and open to the public.

“The Throwaways” is a documentary about the obstacles and difficulties faced by formerly incarcerated African-American men as they attempt to reintegrate into society. It’s told from Ira McKinley's point of view as a homeless ex-felon. Both filmmakers, McKinley and Bhawin Suchak, will be at the screening and will be able to answer questions afterward. “We are incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to both screen the film and have a candid talk with its creators, one of whom is the subject of the documentary, about its significance,” says Jeanine Schroer, professor in the Philosophy department.

The film also discusses racial profiling and police brutality and how they affect black communities. For their work on the documentary, the cast is among Global Citizen’s “5 Black Activists You Need to Know About.”

“A great deal of the current analysis of racism appeals to data that can numb people to the very real, very personal consequences of systematic racism,” says Schroer. “This event offers the UMD community an unparalleled opportunity to engage with the human experience of racism behind all the statistics.”

“The Throwaways” is sponsored by the Philosophy Department through a Dean's Excellence Fund and departmental contribution, along with the Sociology/Anthropology Department, a teaching grant for Katie Owens-Murphy, African & African American Studies, the English Department, Center of Ethics and Public Policy, and the Center for Genocide Studies.
