UMD Alumnus Named Commissioner of IRRRB

Alumnus Mark Phillips

DULUTH, MN — Mark Phillips, an alumnus of the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) and a member of the Labovitz School of Business and Economics (LSBE) Dean's Business Advisory Council, has been named the commissioner of the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB). Phillips was appointed by Minnesota Governor Dayton.

“We congratulate Mark on his appointment,” said LSBE Dean Amy B. Hietapelto. “LSBE educates students to become future business leaders. Mark has shown himself to be an excellent leader throughout his career. We are extremely proud of his achievements.”

An Eveleth native and a resident of Virginia, Minn., for 30 years, Phillips has a long history of involvement with UMD since earning a degree in business administration in 1973. He was a member of the UMD Corporate Partners group and was the founding chair of the UMD Center for Economic Development Advisory Board. Phillips also served on the University of Minnesota Alumni Association National Board for five years, representing the northeastern part of the state. He has been a member of the LSBE Dean's Business Advisory Council since it was formed in 1998.

Phillips served as the IRRRB’s director of economic development from 1983 to 1988. He was previously the director of corporate relations for Minnesota Power and a vice president for Northeast Ventures/Iron Range Ventures. Most recently, he was the director of business development for Twin Cities-based Kraus-Anderson Construction Company.

LSBE is accredited by the AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business); LSBE just recently earned continuation of accreditation. Less than 5% of business schools worldwide have earned this prestigious distinction. In Northeastern Minnesota, LSBE is the only school to have attained AACSB accreditation. Its website is lsbe.d.umn.edu.
