UMD’s Natural Resources Research Institute Receives Excellence in Economic Development Award

DULUTH, MN — Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) at the University of Minnesota Duluth received a Bronze Excellence in Economic Development Award in the category of Sustainable & Green Development for communities with populations of 200,000–500,000 from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). NRRI was nominated by Pamela Sarvela at Minnesota Energy Resources.

The honor was presented at an awards ceremony on Monday, October 20, during the IEDC Annual Conference, held October 19–22 in Fort Worth, Texas.

“Economic development efforts have long been a keystone in the quest to bolster the economy and improve quality of life in every locality across the country,” said Bill Sproull, IEDC chair. “As the nation continues to tackle challenges in the midst of global uncertainty, these efforts have taken on an even greater significance. With this award, we laud trendsetting organizations like Natural Resources Research Institute for leading the charge.”

NRRI was formed by the Minnesota state legislature in 1983 with a mission to foster the economic development of Minnesota's natural resources in an environmentally sound manner to promote private sector employment. Today, it employs approximately 150 engineers, technicians and environmental scientists to advocate excellence in research for a sustainable economy and environment.

IEDC's Excellence in Economic Development Awards recognize the world’s best economic development programs and partnerships, marketing materials, and the year’s most influential leaders. These awards honor organizations and individuals for their efforts in creating positive change in urban, suburban, and rural communities.
