DULUTH, MN – Six University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) students have been accepted into the McNair Scholars Program for fall 2013. The McNair Scholars Program prepares talented, highly motivated undergraduate students for doctoral studies in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines.

The UMD students for fall 2013 are:

  • Sydnie J. Mauch, a sophomore from Brainerd, Minn., majoring in biology;
  • Matilda V. Omoru, a senior from Saint Paul, Minn., majoring in biology and minoring in African and African American studies;
  • Rachel A. Phelps, a senior from Duluth, Minn. majoring in history and German;
  • Ly-Vong Vue, a senior, from Madison, Wis., majoring in psychology;
  • Marvin Nieto-Robles, a senior from Brooklyn Park, Minn., majoring in biology;

McNair is open to low-income, first-generation college students or those from populations underrepresented in STEM graduate fields who are seeking to pursue a Ph.D.

McNair Scholars are paired with faculty mentors for academic enrichment, research, and internships. UMD faculty serve as student mentors. Students also participate in workshops, seminars, and conferences designed to help them secure admission to doctoral programs and obtain financial resources for graduate study.

The McNair Scholars Program is a federal TRIO program funded at 177 institutions across the United States and Puerto Rico by the U.S. Department of Education. The goal of the McNair Scholars Program is to increase graduate degree awards for students from underrepresented segments of society.
