Swenson Civil Engineering Building Honored by MCA

DULUTH, MN – UMD's James I. Swenson Civil Engineering Building received the 2013 Award of Excellence in the green/sustainable construction category from the Minnesota Construction Association (MCA). Accepting the award was Stahl Construction, a St. Louis Park, Minn. firm that worked as the general contractor on the building. The award was granted on Jan. 23 at the 2013 MCA Awards of Excellence Gala at the Minneapolis Golf Course.

The 34,000-square-foot Swenson Civil Engineering Building was designed to showcase the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree program and contains classrooms, computer labs, offices, and six specialized teaching and research laboratories. The building has previously earned LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Some of the structure's sustainable elements used include the use of local materials such as northern Minnesota taconite and recycled pickle barrels from Wisconsin.

The Swenson Civil Engineering Building was constructed with many exposed structural features to serve as a learning tool for engineering students. The two largest labs within the building were designed to put engineering on display and give viewers a glimpse of what civil engineers do.

The building was completed in 2010 and was designed by Ross Barney Architects of Chicago, with SJA Architects (now TKDA) of Duluth as the architect on record. The total structure cost was $15 million.

The MCA Awards of Excellence is awarded annually and recognizes construction projects and association members that make substantial contributions to the construction community.
