UMD Professor Named College of Pharmacy Department Head
Grant Anderson
DULUTH, MN –After an extensive national search, Associate Professor Grant
Anderson has been named department head for Pharmacy Practice and
Pharmaceutical Sciences at the College of Pharmacy's department on the Duluth
campus. He began his duties on April 15.
As department head, Anderson will lead all faculty, staff, students and trainees
of the department and have a primary role in managing departmental planning,
communications, faculty development and operations.
"I am honored and thrilled for the opportunity to lead this department," said
Anderson. "Our department is unique in the University of Minnesota system,
with a truly interdisciplinary faculty spanning clinical, social and basic sciences.
The diversity of disciplinary knowledge is our strength, and with the support
of outstanding staff and students, we have an opportunity to lead and excel in
education and research, and provide dedicated service to our community and the
state of Minnesota."
Anderson joined the College of Pharmacy faculty in 2003 and was instrumental in
building the Pharm.D. and graduate programs on the college's Duluth campus. He
currently serves as the director of graduate studies for the department of Pharmacy
Practice and Pharmaceutical Sciences and as co-chair of the Curriculum Revision
Steering Committee, which leads the college's effort in developing a new curriculum
that will roll out this fall.
Anderson's research is multi-disciplinary with an overarching focus on brain
development and function, including studying the impact of thyroid hormone and iron deficiency on brain development, the treatment of depression, and the
transport of hormones and drugs across the blood-brain barrier. He teaches several
graduate and Pharm.D. courses; and he has been recognized numerous times with
Teacher of the Semester and Teacher of the Year awards.
A native of rural Cloquet, Minn., Anderson received his bachelor of science and
doctorate in microbiology from the University of Minnesota.
Located on the Duluth campus, Pharmacy Practice and Pharmaceutical Sciences
is one of five academic departments within the University of Minnesota College of
Pharmacy. The department emphasizes rural health care issues and the provision of
pharmaceutical care in rural and tribal communities.
