UMD Highlights Open Studio and Student Exhibition on April 27

DULUTH, MN – The Department of Art & Design at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) invites the public to two events in April. Both events will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013 on the UMD campus and are free and open to the public. "This is a great opportunity for the community to see the creativity of UMD art students," said Joellyn Rock, assistant professor in the Department of Art & Design. "During the Open Studio, the public will get a behind-the–scenes look at art in the making."

1—5 p.m. Open Studio
UMD's Department of Art & Design opens its doors to the public to view student work and facilities from 1 p.m.—5 p.m. on Saturday, April 27. The Open Studio event includes classroom tours, demonstrations, hands-on activities, live music, and showcases of graphic design and visual art. The open studios are located in Anderson Hall and Humanities Buildings at 1201 Ordean Court on the UMD campus. Future students, artists, and alumni are also invited.

Open Studio is an annual event created by the UMD Art Guild, a student organization. Students display their artwork and give demonstrations of various art processes such as screen printing, wheel throwing, and digital image transfer. Live bands will play in studios throughout the day. Visitors may participate in performance art workshops, photo booths, and surprise activities. This event is free and open to the public. Further information can be obtained by Austin Boe at boexx085@d.umn.edu or Elizabeth James at ejames@d.umn.edu.

6—8 p.m. Art & Design's Annual Student Exhibition Reception
After the Art & Design Open Studios on Saturday, April 27, 2013, the public is invited to the Tweed Museum for the Annual Student Exhibition Opening Reception from 6—8 p.m. The Awards Ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. The exhibition reception will feature live music and refreshments and is also free and open to the public.

Art & Design's Annual Student Exhibition features creative work across a range of media, including animation, ceramics, digital art, drawing, graphic design, interactive design, motion graphics, packaging design, painting, photography, printmaking, robotics, sculpture, and video. The plurality of media and aesthetic approaches represented reflects the diversity of the department's students and faculty. This year's show was juried by Anne Dugan, curator at the Duluth Art Institute, and Jenna Akre, a Minneapolis-based art director/designer and a 2005 UMD graduate. The exhibition runs April 9—May 12, 2013 in UMD's Tweed Museum of Art.
