Great Lakes Aquarium Interactive Exhibit

Created by UMD students and staff

Sea lampreys, the round goby, and even goldfish have one thing in common: they are invasive species for local and regional lakes.

Recently, the Great Lakes Aquarium has incorporated a unique exhibit, "Repel the Invaders," with shadow sensitive interaction that allows viewers to reach out or repel a variety of creatures.

Designed by UMD graduate students, Michele Clark and Eric Stykel, with scenic painting by Ann Gumpper, the project was led by the UMD Director of Visualization and Digital Imaging Lab, Lisa Fitzpatrick.

"This exhibit teaches about invasive species, and the importance of local, native creatures that benefit our waters," said Fitzpatrick. "It also illustrates how we, as humans, have a direct effect on the population of both the invader and the native. My hope is that it will instill curiosity about Lake Superior."
