2012 UMD Student Move-In Day and the Chancellor’s Convocation

Lieutenant Governor Yvonne Prettner Solon attending the Friday event
UMD Student Move-In Day is set for Thursday, August 30 from 9 am- 3:30 pm, while on Friday, August 31 at 1 pm, Lieutenant Governor Yvonne Prettner Solon is attending the UMD Chancellor's Convocation taking place in the Romano Gym. Throughout the state of Minnesota, legislative leaders are visiting a variety of campuses over a ten-day period.

"During the convocation," said Chancellor Black, "we welcome our incoming first year students. UMD faculty, staff, and returning students are also in attendance at the convocation as we begin the new academic year. I am pleased that our legislative leaders are planning to visit campus events, illustrating their support of higher education."

During the Thursday Move-In Day, a number of UMD student groups are gathering on Woodland Avenue wearing bright gold and maroon shirts. While holding signs, they will greet and assist new students as they make their way to UMD from 8 am-4 pm.

Throughout the day, the campus will be filled with students, parents, grandparents, and siblings as well as food, music, fun and orientation activities. The unloading of vehicles will take place at Lake Superior Hall and Griggs Hall. Food tents will be set up near "Griggs Beach" behind Lake Superior Hall.

UMD Chancellor Lendley C. Black, along with vice chancellors, deans, professors and staff, will be on hand to meet, greet and welcome students and their families as students move into their campus residence halls.

As the "Chancellor's Welcome Team" greets parents, answers questions and visits with students, all will be wearing the Chancellor's Welcome Team t-shirts. Over 150 student volunteers from a variety of campus organizations will also be on hand to assist students and their families. The volunteers will "fetch and tote" helping with moving chores and providing information on student clubs and activities.

"It's a great privilege to welcome our new students and their families on Move-in Day," said Vice Chancellor for Student Life Lisa Erwin. "It's exciting to celebrate the beginning of the new school year with our students, faculty and staff."
