Sustainable Agriculture Project Event

On Saturday, September 24 from 10 a.m.–2 p.m., the Sustainable Agriculture Project at UMD welcomes the community to tour the field sites that are being developed for vegetable and fruit education, research, and demonstration. Two sites are available for touring, including the Vegetable Field and the Heritage Orchard.

The tour will include discussions about the plans for developing the 10-acre site.
During the 2011 summer and early fall, the vegetable field grew produce for UMD Dining Services, and provided experiential education for UMD students.

During the event, participants will learn how the vegetable field and the heritage orchard provide opportunities for students and the community to learn about fruit tree development, variety identification, organic and integrated pest management, and restorative pruning and grafting.

All tours are free and open to the public.

The heritage orchard is located at the UMD Research and Field Studies Center (UMD Farm) at 4709 Jean Duluth Road. Participants are welcome to tour the five-acre orchard and the restoration process that is now underway after nearly five decades of neglect.

The vegetable field is located 1/3 mile west of the intersection of Jean Duluth and Riley Roads: turn left into the field road that is just past a line of tall pine trees.
