UMD is well represented at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia, and KUMD 103.3 FM has amazing LIVE coverage. Tune in every weekday, February 7–24 at 7 am and 11 am, for LIVE FROM SOCHI reports. Listen online.
The LIVE reports will feature chats with UMD alumnus and Duluthian Cory Salmela who is in Sochi. He will provide information and updates on Olympic happenings, standings, and medals won by the USA, with an emphasis on those with UMD and Minnesota connections.
Starting Feb. 7, KUMD will also offer a special "Minnesota Roster" and Olympic schedule so you can follow over 30 athletes with ties to Minnesota.
UMD has current and former student athletes on six women’s hockey teams. They are: Haley Irwin, Jocelyn Laroque, and Caroline Ouellette on Team Canada; Tea Villila on Team Finland with Tuula Puputti as team manager; Jenny Harss on Team Germany; Iya Gavrilova and Alexandra Vafina on Team Russia; Jenni Asserholt, Kim Martin, and Pernilla Winberg on Team Sweden; and Lara Stalder on Team Switzerland. Julie Chu, former UMD women's hockey assistant coach, and Robb Stauber, former UMD women's goalie coach, are on the Team USA women's hockey coaching staff. KUMD will feature live reports and special interviews with many of these individuals.
Former UMD Bulldog and current Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk is on the roster for Team USA's men's hockey.
Two UMD alumni, John Shuster and John Landsteiner, will represent the United States in curling. Their teammates, Jeff Isaacson and Jared Zezel, are former UMD students. Shuster took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and won a bronze medal in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.
