UMD students meet informally with employers and maximize their opportunities for summer jobs, internships, and careers.

The third annual Civil Engineering Career Fair will be held in the Swenson Civil Engineering Building High Bay Lab on February 7, 2014. The event, which runs from 8:30 am–1 pm, gives students a chance to meet company representatives and pursue employment opportunities. "A lot of big name companies are going to be attending, such as LHB and Meyer Borgman Johnson," said Miranda Anderson, a senior civil engineering student. "It's a great place to meet employers because only companies hiring civil engineers are present. It makes the decision process simpler as there is no need to weed out companies who aren't looking for civil engineers."

Last year, 17 companies registered and roughly 100 students participated in this event. This year, 18 companies have already registered. Civil Engineering graduate student Matthew Jansen said it was easy to talk to professionals in the business. "The Career Fair is a great networking opportunity for engineering students. They can get a foot in the door," he said.

April Boehne, a sophomore civil engineering student, said students look forward to the event. "The fair gives students the opportunity to meet with companies from the area who are looking to hire," she said. "The best part last year was learning about which companies were hiring in the different focus areas of civil engineering: geotechnical, water resources, structural, and even transportation civil engineering," Boehne said.
